Assegnati i premi, al Beverly Hilton Hotel di Los Angeles, dalla Visual Effects Society Awards: si tratta dei riconoscimenti della categoria degli artisti degli effetti visivi giunti alla quindicesima edizione. A fare incetta di premi è stato il live action Disney Il Libro della Giungla, che si è aggiudicato cinque premi: miglior film, migliore animazione (per King Louie), fotografia virtuale, simulazioni e compositing. Il campione di nomination, Rogue One: a Star Wars Story, è rimasto a bocca asciutta nonostante le sette candidature. Come per molti altri premi singoli, di categoria (dalla regia, al montaggio, al premio del sindacato degli attori) anche per gli effetti speciali solitamente il vincitore trionfa poi all'Oscar: è accaduto in 14 edizioni su 15. Film da battere nella categoria, agli Oscar 2017, sarà dunque Il Libro della Giungla.
Game of Thrones 7, conto alla rovescia: intanto la serie vince 5 premi
Premi anche per Deepwater Horizon e Oceania, soddisfazione per Kubo e la Spada Magica che ha vinto il VES Award per i migliori effetti visivi in un film d’animazione. Per la tv il vincitore è stato Game of Thrones con cinque premi.
